How will you jump over life's hurdles?

It is safe to say that reaching continual success within the music industry isn't just about learning to move forward, it's about learning to hurdle during the process. Much like a runner learns to navigate her way over obstacle after obstacle, refining her technique a bit more each time, musicians, songwriters and vocalists do this everyday within the music business to continue forward progress.

Performers can encounter potential problems at each show they play at. From rough crowds to the never-pleased venue management, they face obstacles constantly. Each venue is different; different set lists, sound management, and acoustics vary from show to show.

Performing artists also encounter double bookings, canceled shows due to budget and weather, and payment problems on a regular basis. At the end of a string of shows or recording project, an artist can feel burnt out and quite tired.

All of these issues act as the hurdles we have to jump over on a day to day basis. But the applause from different crowds and supporters act as the cheerleaders to our team(whether it's a one-man team or not).

I was playing a show recently that wasn't going incredibly smoothly. Nothing horrible happened, just the usual minute issues that have an overall wear and tear effect on a musician. It was a process getting through each song I sang. I had to muster up an extreme amount of mental energy to play my sets.

But there was a group of people at the bar of the restaurant, clapping away after every tune. And one woman in particular within the group, was what the popular show, How I Met Your Mother, has so eloquently dubbed, 'A Whoo Girl.'

A 'Whoo Girl,' is any woman who will let her happiness and satisfaction of a good time be known by letting out wonderful 'Whoo' cries, often.

When I played a song she particularly liked, a definite whoo could be heard through out the venue. And while some good buddies motioned for her to keep it down just a bit, I loved it. It gave me the good vibes I needed to finish the night on a high note.

Afterwards, I couldn't help myself. I had to say hello and give her some free merchandise.

That night, 'The Whoo Girl,' was my cheerleader. One of the amazing people who took time out of their good time, to show the musician some support. I am forever grateful for moments like that. And will never forget them.

Supporters of all kinds, fans, musicians, and family members, give us the strength we musicians need to jump over those ever-present hurdles and get on to the next race. They give us the courage to win the race. And they give us the means to even compete in the race in the first place.

The philosophy of, 'I do not stop for obstacles, I destroy them,' is a mantra I am grooming myself to practice at all times. It's a philosophy than can put everything in to perspective for us right-brainers.

It helps us to remember that even though we will face obstacles that will try and bring us down, we will always find a way to destroy them and move forward. And as The Beatles once said, we can do this, with a little help from our friends.

When obstacles start slowing you down, look to supportive people to bring you back up to speed. Whether it's one person or many, I always feel quality can be better than quality.

After all, the focus isn't on the hurdles you face, it's how you jump over them.

Florida Guitar Instructor Kent Smedley Tells You How To Find The Best Instructor For Your Needs in His New E-Book

Kent(on right) performing with me at my debut CD Release
at Mellow Mushroom Fleming Island
Behind every great musician is most likely a great instructor. Even if a singer, guitar player or pianist has never been classically trained, chances are they have some sort of mentor they think of when asked the question, 'Who has had an impact on your music education journey?'

For me, the first person who comes to mind is Florida guitar instructor Kent Smedley. Not only is Kent an amazing teacher, but he helped me record a demo to a song of mine that helped me place in my first music competition when I was in high school. And I went to an arts school, so they are hard to impress.

He also performed with me at my first CD release, and shows up to my live performances as much as he can  to show his support. He is not just a teacher I used to go see once a week to work on scales and different types of chords, he's a type of musical father to me.

In the tough industry that is the music business, you need someone you can call on when things get confusing. You need someone with experience to tell you not to succumb to pressure, and to keep doing it your own way because that way is unique and will pay off. That's Kent in a nutshell.

I could write pages about all of the things Kent, and his family, has done for me, but for now I'll stick to telling you about his new E-book, 'What To Look For in a Guitar Instructor,' out now.

During the first month my family and I moved to Florida when I was around 13, my mom found me a guitar instructor. From day one, Kent gave me the tools I needed to write songs, which is exactly what I wanted to do. His instruction is one of the blessings I count when I look back on all of the positive things I gained when I moved to the Sunshine State.

We heard about Kent through a friend; by the luck of the draw, and word of mouth, we found an incredible guitar instructor.  But not everyone gets that lucky. Some sort through a few different instructors until they find the one that's a good fit.

In Kent's new E-Book, he gives you all of the knowledge you need to make an informed decision when finding an instructor, and his book is based on nearly thirty years of hard work and experience. Not only will he tell you all the things to look for in an instructor, but he will give you a better look into yourself as a musician. Whether you're a budding guitar player, or professional one looking to challenge your skills in new ways, Kent allows you to reflect on your own preference through out the book so you better know who to look for.

If you want a book that gives you the know-how on the search for a guitar instructor, a book that stirs reflection in your own self as a player, or one that offers a look into the music education world, pick up his E-Book, 'What To Look For in a Guitar Instructor.' You won't be disappointed.

'Honest' Single Set For Release in October

Significant progress has been made for the Video Release Party taking place in October. We are hard at work finding an exact date for the release. We will have that for you very shortly. Many great things will be happening at the party including hearing the studio version of 'Honest' for the first time, premiering the music video for the song, and I will perform an intimate, acoustic set for everybody during the event.

We can't wait to get the final details out to everybody. Although I can't announce all of the specifics for the event yet, I can tell you that the night of the video release, I will release 'Honest' as a single that can be purchased on iTunes, Amazon and more. You will be able to hear it for the first time at the release, and a physical copy of it will be available at the event.

I will be in the studio recording the song in September. I am excited to be recording at Chuck Nash's studio, which we used for 'Now Here,' and I am happy to have Kent Smedley contribute lead guitar to the recording.

Thanks so much for all of the interest in the release party. We will have all of the details to you by the 1st of September!

LeGrand's: A Home Away From Home

I have the honor and privilege of performing in some of North East Florida's premier venues. From restaurants and bars, to listening rooms and concert halls, the opportunities for a musician in Jacksonville spread far and wide. I am so appreciative of each new opportunity I am presented with. Last night's performance at LeGrand's Steak and Seafood Restaurant was a night that helped me remember why I started performing in the first place

LeGrand's is a place with an atmosphere that leaves you at ease the minute you walk in the door. With a friendly staff and beautiful decor, you can't help but fall in love. Normally, when I walk into a place to perform, I get an instant feel of the energy that will be flowing through the room during the night. Sometimes it's good, sometimes not so good(nothing is perfect!). I have to say, the energy I felt at LeGrand's when I walked into the venue was some of the most positive I've felt in awhile. I was promptly made welcome. My supporters were treated like family. And everyone couldn't stop talking about how great the food was by the end of the night.

Through out each set, both customers and staff come up and talk to me, which is always a wonderful plus. I got to meet a lot of great, new people last night. After a string of a couple tough weeks in the performing business, last night was exactly what I needed to get back to center.

The positive energy, friendly people, and relaxing, warm atmosphere allowed me to remember how much I love performing for a room of people looking to have a nice evening. I remembered how much I love meeting new faces, and seeing supporters who selflessly come out to shows and support both venues and my music.

LeGrand's is definitely a wonderful addition to the Mandarin restaurant life. And without a doubt, a wonderful addition to my own.

Performing at LeGrand's Steak and Seafood Tuesday evening

A special thank you goes out to Stephanie Till for her expert photography and videography skills last night. She was hard at work during the performance.

Also, thank you to all of the wonderful support I received last night. Your presence has a lasting affect on me long after the performance is over.

And thank you deeply to all those at LeGrand's for having me out to perform!

Team Rebecca Day Press Release- Please Read

Team Rebecca Day Press Release 8.13.12

Members of Team Rebecca Day have been busy lately keeping up with all of Rebecca’s shows around Jacksonville. With new venues on the schedule and the upcoming music video release event, there is so much to be excited about.

However, Team Rebecca Day would like to issue a sincere apology for recent cancelled performances at the beach.

Due to booking procedures on the part of one client, double bookings occurred. Rebecca discovered the mistakes in less than two hours prior to the shows. Team Rebecca Day tried to ensure that all supporters who planned to come out were notified as quickly as possible, but on Saturday, August 11th, this wasn’t possible due to Rebecca discovering the issue 30 minutes prior to show time after she had packed all her equipment and arrived at the venue.

Rebecca has so many dedicated supporters who plan their evenings and weekends around her scheduled shows. This is a blessing and the loyal support she receives allows her to do what she truly loves every day.

Team Rebecca Day is fortunate this has only occurred with one client. Rebecca will continue working hard to produce the best live music in town at the best restaurants and venues in Jax and elsewhere.

Thank you all so much for the continued support, and we hope to see you soon!

I am honored to be the first musician to grace the floor and provide tunes for a few hours. From 7-10 pm, I'll be performing your favorite covers and originals. Come on out and relax a bit tomorrow night. Your mind, and taste buds, will thank you.

Solo, Acoustic Performance at Nipper's Beach Grille Saturday Afternoon

Taken at Mellow Mushroom Fleming Island
I'd love to share some of the Florida sunshine, and my tunes, with you this Saturday afternoon(August 11th) at Nipper's Beach Grille. Nipper's is a waterfront restaurant near the beach with a spacious outside bar. This venue definitely doesn't lack character. I'll be performing on their outside pavilion that overlooks Jacksonville's Intra-Coastal Waterway. While soaking up some sun at Nipper's, you can play different games they have available, relax in their over-sized sandbox, and have a cold one by the bar.

I am performing from 1-5 pm. Covers and originals will be in each set. I'd love to see some familiar and new faces. Performing at Nipper's is always a blast, so come on out!

Rebecca Day Music Update

I would do one of those cool, hip video updates that everyone is doing these days, but my lack of makeup and hair product(and trendy shirt) might take away a little bit of rep I've built up over the year. Alas, I am filling you in on the bustling world of Rebecca Day Music the old fashioned way.

  • Summer Performances
I've got so many great summer performance coming up in August and September, I'm having trouble getting each performance date out to y'all. Ill continue to promo on my Personal Facebook Page and Artist Page through out each week, letting you know where I'll be when that live music itch starts getting to you. Also always check out the sidebar of this website because each week I list new performances. I will always be thinking of new and creative ways to get my performance schedule to you so the tried and true Facebook Event Pages don't get too boring.

  • Video Release/ Team Rebecca Day Appreciation Party
The simple video release party for one of my songs has turned into a much needed, full on Team Rebecca Day appreciation party after some brain storming. Of course, we couldn't give you supporters a plain, old run of the mill get together. Sticking to tradition, it will be quite the production you won't want to miss. Continue checking back for more info on this party. It will be happening in October. As soon as I figure out the exact date, I'll let you know.

  • Back in the Recording Studio
In the next couple of weeks, I'll be back in the monster that is the recording studio so I can not only bring you a fresh, new song to premier the music video with, but I will also be gearing up to release a full length studio album next summer. In the mean time, I'll be posting free, acoustic downloads of different tunes I'm recording right now and ones I've recorded in the past. Those downloads, along with ones that are already available, will be on my Reverbnation Artist Page.

I've left out a few things so that I don't get too ahead of myself. Come on out to a performance and say hi. And keep checking back here and on my other pages for more info on these pieces of the music puzzle. Hope to see you soon!
