Miranda Lambert: What you hear is what you get

There is a quote about country music I have always loved: “Country music is three chords and the truth.” While country music star Miranda Lambert’s songs are a little more complicated than a 1, 4, 5 chord progression, her honesty is what makes her music so incredible.
While I have respect for any singer/songwriter, there are certain ones that have a unique impact on your craft.  Miranda Lambert is one of those artists. Since her debut album Kerosene was released, her music, voice, and career path have been an important part of my songwriting and performing.
She has the mark of a true artist. Miranda spent her school days writing music and playing in Texas Bars. And she has never been anything but honest in her songs. One listen to her album Revolution, and you will feel like you know her personally. She can imprint humor, longing, happiness, and regret in her songs like no other. And her personality comes through in each note she sings
I have always taken this similar approach to my songwriting; making sure every lyric is a clear representation of what I want to say. I let my accent come through in my recordings, and I bend the rules of music theory, sometimes without even trying.
Miranda’s newest project, Four The Record, comes out on November 1st.  I’ll be picking it up, and listening to it on the drive home. I still have so much left to learn about music and the road to success. One important lesson Miranda has already taught me though is while there are a many different ways to make it to the top of the Country charts, the only real way to do it is to be honest with yourself and your songs, and people will listen.

Some Words on my Art...

"I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me-like food or water. "- Ray Charles

It is amazing to me the need musicians, songwriters, poets, etc., have in regards to their art. The notes played or the words written are a kind of obsession. I personally can't go a day without singing or playing something. There was a point in my life when I did not write a song, I did not pick up my guitar, I did not sing a note. I was driving in my car one day coming home from class and a commercial came on the radio for a company that needed participants in a medical study for depression. The narrator listed the symptoms of depression: Lack of sleep or too much sleep, loss of focus, feelings of hopelessness, loss of appetite, irritability. To each of these symptoms, out loud in the car, I answered yes. Thus, I had an epiphany.

But why was I depressed? This had never been a problem before. A couple of days later, I realized the lack of music making in my life made life seem not worth living. I won't go into the details of why I was not playing music at the time because the more important part is the realization that if I'm not writing songs, singing, performing, I am unhappy.  I'm unhappy because a significant, large inner part of me is not functioning. Like your heart beats, your eye lids open and close, or your lungs pump air through your body, the notes and melodies within me have to come out into the open.

Like Ray Charles said, "I was born with music inside me...It was a necessity for me- like food or water." Musicians must do the thing their body, their mind, naturally tells them to do. The poet needs to write, the singer needs to sing, the songwriter needs to put words and chords together to make a song. If they don't, they aren't nourishing or hydrating themselves. And we all know what happens when this takes place. Like the ending of a sad song, both the art and the artist fade away. Never let your song fade away.
